Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

What is Breast Lift Surgery?

A breast lift (mastopexy) is a surgical procedure to aesthetically reshape sagging and loose breasts. This surgery allows the nipple and areola (around the nipple) to be lifted upwards by removing excess skin and reshaping the breast tissue. It is usually performed to correct sagging caused by pregnancy, breastfeeding, aging, genetic factors or weight changes.

Why is it performed?

Breast lift surgery is preferred for various reasons:

  1. Breast Sagging: Sagging and disfiguring of the breasts as a result of aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight gain and loss.
  2. Breast Size Change: Large breasts may sag and cause loss of shape. Small breasts may have volume loss and asymmetry.
  3. Aesthetic Appearance: It is performed to achieve a younger, fuller and lifted breast appearance.
  4. Social and Psychological Effects: Sagging breasts can lead to loss of personal self-confidence. A breast lift can relieve these emotional and psychological discomforts.

Why do breasts sag?

The main causes of sagging breasts are as follows:

  1. Aging: Over time, sagging occurs due to decreased skin elasticity, loosening of the breast tissue and the effect of gravity.
  2. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Hormonal changes during pregnancy and breastfeeding can lead to volume changes and sagging of the breasts.
  3. Weight Changes: Rapid weight gain and loss can cause the fat tissue in the breasts to change and cause sagging.
  4. Genetic Factors: Some women may be genetically predisposed to looser skin or weak connective tissue.
  5. Excessive sun exposure: The skin loses its elasticity, which can lead to sagging breasts.

How to Determine the Right Breast Shape and Size?

Here are the factors to consider when determining breast shape and size:

  1. Body Proportion: Breast size should be compatible with the person’s body size. For example, a breast that is too small or too large can distort body proportions.
  2. Observations and Expectations: Considering the aesthetic expectations and daily lifestyle of the person, a natural and proportional size should be chosen.
  3. Surgeon’s Recommendations: The surgeon will recommend the most appropriate shape and size according to the woman’s body structure, breast tissue condition and personal preferences.
  4. Breast Simulations: Some surgeons may recommend the right size and shape by performing computer-assisted simulations or photo analysis to see the degree of sagging before surgery.

How is a breast lift performed?

The breast lift procedure usually involves the following steps:

  1. Anesthesia: The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, so the patient sleeps during the procedure and does not feel any pain.
  2. Incisions: There are three main incision techniques:
    • Periareolar (around the areola): It is shaped with an incision around the nipple. It is suitable for small sagging.
    • Lollipop Method: An incision is made around the areola and vertically under the breast. It is used for larger sagging.
    • Inverted T Method: An additional incision is made both around the areola and under the breast. It is most preferred for sagging.
  3. Shaping the Breast Tissue: Excess skin is removed and the breast tissue is reshaped. The nipple is pulled up during this procedure.
  4. Closure of Scars: The incisions are closed and the healing process begins.

How Long Does Breast Lift Surgery Take?

Breast lift surgery usually takes 2-3 hours. The duration of the surgery may vary depending on the technique and the special condition of the patient. Your surgeon will give you specific information about the details of the surgical process.

Before Breast Lift Surgery

Here are the things to do when preparing for breast lift surgery:

  1. Health Assessment: A general health examination and some tests may be performed before the surgery.
  2. Smoking: Smokers are advised not to smoke for at least 4-6 weeks before surgery. Smoking can negatively affect the healing process.
  3. Medication Use: Your doctor will inform you about the medications you should not use before surgery.
  4. Breast Tissue Evaluation: The surgeon evaluates the degree of sagging and the current condition of the breast tissue.

After Breast Lift

The process after breast lift surgery is usually as follows:

  1. Pain and Swelling: There may be mild pain and swelling for the first few days. Painkillers provide relief during this period.
  2. Special Bra: It is important to use a special bra or bandage after surgery. This supports healing and ensures that the breasts remain in the correct position.
  3. Activity Restriction: It is recommended to avoid heavy exercise for the first 4-6 weeks.

Recovery Process

The recovery process after breast lift surgery:

  1. First 1-2 weeks: Swelling and bruising may occur. However, pain is usually mild during this period and can be controlled with painkillers.
  2. Scars: At first, there may be red and raised scars around the incisions, but over time these scars will fade and become less prominent.
  3. Full Recovery: In 3-6 months, the healing is complete and the results are clear. The nipple and breast tissue take a more natural shape.
  4. Control Appointments: The surgeon will follow you during the healing process and check for any complications.
