What is a Neck Lift?

A neck lift is a plastic surgery procedure known medically as a “neck lift”. Skin sagging, fat accumulation and muscle relaxation can occur in the neck area due to aging, weight loss or genetic factors. This can lead to an aged appearance on the face and neck. Neck lift surgery is a procedure performed to remove excess skin and fat tissue in the neck area to provide a more taut, youthful and aesthetic appearance. This operation is usually combined with facelift surgery, but it can also be performed alone.

How is Neck Lift Procedure Performed?

Neck lift surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia or sedation and takes approximately 2-3 hours. The procedure is personalized according to the patient’s needs and can be performed with several different techniques:

Liposuction: If there is excess fat accumulation in the neck area, excess fat tissue is removed using liposuction. This method is more preferred in patients with good skin elasticity.

Platysmaplasty (Muscle Repair): Neck muscles (platysma) may become loose over time. With the platysmaplasty technique, these muscles are tightened and a more tense appearance is obtained.

Skin Tightening and Removal of Excess Skin: If the patient has severe sagging and excess skin in the neck area, the skin is stretched and excess tissue is removed. The incision is usually made behind the ear or under the chin, so that external scars are kept to a minimum.

Neck Lift Preoperative Preparation

Before surgery, the patient’s health status is evaluated and necessary blood tests are performed. Blood thinners should be discontinued in the preoperative period. Patients who smoke are advised to quit smoking before and after surgery to speed up the healing process. In addition, the surgical process, expectations and recovery process should be discussed in detail with the doctor before the procedure.

Neck Lift Surgery Process

The surgery is usually performed in a hospital setting under general anesthesia. The surgeon tightens the skin by removing excess skin, fat and muscle tissue in the neck area. The incision sites are usually planned to be behind the ear or under the chin so that postoperative scars are minimized. After the procedure, a bandage is applied to the neck area to reduce swelling and bruising.

Care and Recovery After Neck Lift Surgery

The postoperative healing process may vary from person to person, but is usually largely complete within a few weeks. Mild swelling, bruising and a feeling of tightness are normal after the procedure. Sleeping with the head elevated for the first few days may help reduce swelling. It is important for patients to avoid heavy physical activity for a few weeks, take medications recommended by the doctor and keep follow-up appointments. Bandages are usually removed within the first week and patients can return to their daily lives within 1-2 weeks. Full recovery and final results may take 3-6 months.
