Fat Injection (Facial Fat Injection)

How is Facial Fat Injection Performed? How Long Does It Take?

Facial fat injection (lipofilling or fat filling) is the injection of fat tissue taken from one’s own body into the facial area. This procedure is used to rejuvenate facial contours, compensate for volume loss and achieve a more natural appearance.

The fat injection process usually consists of the following steps:

  1. Fat Extraction: Fat tissue is removed from different parts of the body (usually the abdomen, thighs or back) under local anesthesia. The fat is purified through a special process.
  2. Fat Injection: The cleaned and purified fat is injected into the facial area through fine needles or cannulas. The fat is injected into the areas that need to be volumized according to the needs of the face (for example, cheeks, under the eyes, jaw line).
  3. Duration: The fat injection procedure usually takes 1-2 hours, but the duration may vary depending on the amount of fat to be removed and the areas to be treated.

What to Consider When Performing Fat Injection?

Fat injection should be performed by an experienced plastic surgeon. Some important factors to be considered for a successful procedure are as follows:

  • Fat Intake Area: The area from which the fat tissue is taken must be smooth and have a sufficient amount of fat tissue.
  • Fat Purification: The removed fat should be purified with special machines or techniques, excess fluids and foreign substances should be removed.
  • Injection Techniques: The fat should be injected homogeneously into the face area. Injecting too much fat can lead to excessive fullness or asymmetry.
  • Hygiene and Sterilization: Hygiene rules should be observed during the procedure. The risk of infection should be minimized.

Where Should We Get Fat Tissues for Fat Injection?

Fat tissue is usually taken from areas of the body where excess fat accumulates. These areas include the following:

  • Abdomen: Fat in the abdominal area can often be used and is usually easy to remove.
  • Thighs: Fatty tissue in areas such as the thighs, buttocks and above the knee are also suitable places for fat removal.
  • Back: Fat from the back can be removed, especially from the waist and upper back.
  • Arms and Cheeks: Fat can also be removed from the arms, but this is generally less preferred.

The area to remove fat is determined according to the person’s body structure and the doctor’s preferences.

When are the results of facial fat injection visible?

After fat injection, results are usually seen immediately. However, the results may not be fully understood initially due to swelling and edema. Some of the fat tissue may disappear after the procedure because some of the injected fat is absorbed by the body. Therefore, the real results are usually fully visible within 3-6 months. The effect of the post-injection procedure may vary depending on the amount of fat used, personal factors and the area treated.

Is Facial Fat Injection Permanent?

Although fat injection to the face has the potential to be permanent, it is not completely permanent. Some of the fat is absorbed by the body and may disappear over time. However, the remaining fat can be permanent and the effects can last for years. How much fat remains in the body depends on personal factors, the elasticity of the skin and the amount used. Still, the results can remain effective for several years and may require an additional procedure over time.

Fat injection can be an ideal option for patients who want to achieve a natural look and are looking for more permanent results, but it should be considered that fat loss may occur after the procedure.
